چکیده

The formulation of Grand Unified Theories, which allow magnetic monopole-like solutions [1], has stimulated a wide interest in the search of magnetic monopoles and recently evidence has been claimed of their detection [2]. In view of planning further efforts to confirm the existence of magnetic monopoles, it is useful to know the behaviour of these particles when they reach Earth. With this purpose, in this letter we discuss the existence of bound states of magnetic monopoles and atomic nuclei. We estimate the energy levels and the formation rates of these systems. We also comment on some phenomenological implications of the existence of bound states, mainly in connection with the monopole catalysis of proton decay [31. We consider only electrically neutral monopoles, the case of dyons being treated elsewhere [4]. Only the main results of our investigation will be presented. For an extended discussion of the items touched upon in this letter we refer to a forthcoming paper [51. We consider a monopole with a magnetic charge * qM = e/2e, e = -+1, and a nucleus A N with mass m, spin S = I/2 an.d magnetic moment la = S e k / m . Ti le interaction of the magnetic moment with the field B(R) generated by the monopole,

Interactions of Magnetic Monopoles with Nuclei and Atoms: Formation of Bound States and Phenomenological Consequences

We discuss the binding of magnetic monopoles to nuclear and atomic systems. The energy spectrum is calculated, by assuming an interaction with a hard core. The formation process of monopole-nucleus bound states is analysed and it is shown that monopoles reaching Earth are most likely bound to a proton. We also discuss phenomenological implications of the existence of bound states in connection ...

Size Evolution Study of the Electronic and Magnetic Properties of MgO Nanoclusters

Magnesium oxide nanoclusters have attracted much attention due to their potential applications to catalysis and novel optoelectronic materials. In the present study, we have studied the electronic and magnetic properties of the stoichiometric magnesium oxide nanoclusters (MgO)n  for n = 2-20. Although the binding energy increases with the size of the cluster, it  re...

Possible Binding of a Magnetic Monopole to a Particle with Electric Charge and a Magnetic Dipole Moment

~ 'HIS subject was first discussed by Malkus, ' who concluded that there cannot be bound states between Dirac monopoles and naturally occurring free nuclei. I disagree with Malkus's interpretation of his results, and believe that bound states of this type with binding energies up to the GeU range are a definite possibility if monopoles exist at all. Because they involve assumptions about the pr...

The effects of isomerism and side chain mutation on binding energy and NMR/NQR tensors of L-methionylasparagine and L-asparagylmethionine

Density functional theory methods(DFT) and natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis were used to investigate the effects of isomerism and side chain mutation at a microscopic level on the stability, binding energy and NMR/NQR tensors of structural isomers, L- methionylasparagine (Met-Asn) and L- asparagylmethionine (Asn-Met) in the gas phase. The results represented that the isomerism and side chain...

Topological phase due to electric dipole moment and magnetic monopole interaction.

We show that there is an analogous Aharonov-Casher topological effect on a neutral particle with electric dipole moment interacting with a magnetic field produced by magnetic monopoles.
